Commissioned by the Melbourne International Arts Festival in October, 2008, Ecstatic City is a three-theatre 'miniplex marina' built as a temporary installation in the moat of the NGV International. Viewers negotiated catwalks just above the surface of the water to enter small theatres showing video works created by some of Australia's leading moving image-makers.
Animations created from images shot in Federation Square in Melbourne with a team of students from the Victorian College of Art and based on traditionally static urban monuments were projected onto the exterior walls of the miniplexes and the NGV International itself. The project was funded in part by a grant from Creative Capital Foundation. Sage Coombe Architects were collaborators on the project.
